Dungeon World

“Dungeon World is a world of fantastic adventure. A world of magic, gods and demons, of good and evil, law and chaos. Brave heroes venture into the most dangerous corners of the land in search of gold and glory.

Adventurers take many shapes in Dungeon World. The races of elves, men, dwarves, and halflings all have their heroes. Some are near-invincible beasts of battle encased in iron armor. Others are more mysterious, conjuring up and wielding the mighty forces of magic. Treasure and glory are sought by a holy cleric, a tricky thief, a mighty paladin, and more.

It isn’t all easy heroics and noble bravery, though. Every time the ranger guides his friends through the ancient woods there are a hundred things waiting to bite his head off. Slavering hordes of goblin troops, maybe. Or is this the Cursed Wood, where dwells the Gray Witch? Or the throngs of hateful dead, looking to drag a meaty corpse back to their lair? Scary, sure, but there’s treasure, too. More gold and jewels and magic lost to man have fallen between the cracks in the world than you can imagine. Who better to retrieve it than a band of stalwart heroes?

You and your friends are those heroes. You go where others can’t or won’t. There are monstrous things lurking in the world. Are you ready to face them?” - Dungeon World pg6

Character, Group, and World Creation

The below can all be worked out at the table during session 0 and in play. We are telling a collaborative story so don't be afraid or worried about asking others for suggestions and ideas. You don't need an elaborate backstory or character details, or place details. A simple list of bullet points works too.

Look over the Character and Roleplay questions in the character creation section, these are for ideas and don't have to be answered. Though they may come up in later sessions.

Character Must Haves

  1. Reason for adventuring / risking death / dismemberment / etc. Why are you out and about in the world?
  2. Race - You are not limited by what is on your playbook and you will just pick what perk you want.
  3. What you look like
  4. Where are you from
  5. World Region, see world creation below

Why is the Group together

Think about why is the group a group, what do you do? what are you about? Examples

World Creation

Every player will need to create a region for the world. I suggest reading through pages 4-9 of Perilous Wilds for ideas and examples. A region can be anything, floating islands in the sky, underground city, chain of islands in the ocean, the shire, a city on the back of a behemoth, whatever.

“A region is a large swath of landscape with a set boundary, or outline. The overall character of a particular region is determined by its dominant natural or political aspect. For instance, one region might be contain mostly a single terrain type—such as forest or desert—while another might be defined by its political border—such as a kingdom or barony. The decision of what exactly constitutes a region in a given campaign is left to the GM and players; the main thing to understand is that regions break the map into distinct, manageable units, like spaces on the board in a boardgame

Each region has an associated almanac, or written record of that region’s contents, including tags, places, general impressions, obstacles, hazards, and anything else of interest. An almanac may be pre-written (by the GM or a third party), outlined during collaborative world-building (see page 10), or filled in by the GM on the fly. An almanac is a living document which can grow and change over the course of play.” - pg 4 Perilous Wilds

“When you add a region, say whether it’s defined by its terrain or a political border, and then write its name on the map (“The Broken Waste,” “The Barony of Blutarch,” etc.). If you find yourself at a loss, don’t drag it out—just roll up the region’s name using the Random Region table on page 16.” - pg 11&13 Perilous Wilds

Sites, Dangers and other optional details don't have to be fleshed out till we visit them, but feel free to make stuff up.
